Team Spotlight: Care Worker and Coordiantor

Meet Paula, one of our Dorset Care Workers / Coordinators

Meet Paula, one of our Dorset Care Workers who dedicates her career to improving the lives of people in her community. Despite only working in the field since the start of 2023 she has taken quickly to a variety of care roles. In this blog Paula talks about her roles and what qualities it requires to become a successful Care Worker.

Can you tell us about your responsibilities as a Care Worker?

My responsibilities as a Care Worker are ultimately providing a duty of care towards each client.

I do this by following the person-centered care plan which involves delivering all personal care, medication support, nutrition and hydration support, mobility and transfers in a safe manner, and conducting light domestic duties.

I also have a responsibility to safeguard clients, recognising any signs of abuse, and reporting following company policy.

What is a day in the life of a Care Worker like?

Each day is different. You have to have a positive and calm attitude to deal with any situation you could be walking into. One visit could be plain sailing but the next could have its challenges. You have to be prepared at all times…

How did you get into the care industry?

I was a retail manager for 30+ years. I started to fall out of love with retail management, and felt undervalued and overworked, so I decided to leave retail and find a new vocation.

Within 2 weeks I started my journey in the care industry as a Care Worker, I was then promoted to a care and training practitioner, and then promoted again to a care coordinator, all within 1 year.

How long have you been with Abbots Care?

I joined Abbots Care at the end of January 2023.

What three skills would you say are key to being successful in this role?

To be a successful carer you need to have empathy, patience, and passion.

What are your hobbies/interests outside of work?

Outside of work, my main interest is the connection I have with The Gambia.
I support a couple of families and enjoy my 2 trips a year visiting them.
I also have 10 grandchildren who I adore immensely.

Can you tell us what you love most about your role?

I wouldn’t have a role if there were no clients, so what do I love most….it’s obvious…the clients!

What would you like people to know about being a Care Worker?

If someone was to ask me about being a Care Worker, I would tell them that it has to come from your heart, then everything else will follow suit.

What inspires you in your role every day?

My inspiration comes from knowing that today I am going to make a difference to someone’s life.
