What is Spinal Cord Injury Care?
Spinal cord injury care provides expert, tailored support for individuals living with spinal cord injuries at home whilst looking after the complex medical needs that can often occur from these conditions. Dedicated spinal home care means that people can receive personalised, consistent support in the comfort and familiarity of their own home, helping to prevent complications, reduce hospital admissions, and improve their overall quality of life.
Our expert carers are trained to support people with temporary injuries caused by accidents, illness, and long-term spinal injuries caused by underlying health conditions. They have a real focus on empowering choice, supporting mental and physical health, and giving both the individual and their family peace of mind.

How Does Spinal Cord Injury Care Work?
Supporting Challenges from Spinal Injuries
Spinal injuries affect people in many different ways, and the challenges can vary depending on the level and severity of the injury. Some of the common difficulties our current service users face include:
Reduced or limited mobility
• Risk of pressure sores or infections
• Bowel and bladder management needs
• Muscle spasms or chronic pain
• Support with personal care and daily routines
• Emotional impact and adjustment to lifestyle changes
Guided by the expertise of our Community Nurse Assessor, Katie, and strengthened through our partnership with the Spinal Injuries Association, we are committed to ensuring every person receives the highest standard of care. From medical support to encouraging independence, our carers empower people with spinal injuries to live comfortably and confidently at home.
Integration Into Daily Life
Living with a spinal cord injury can feel very overwhelming and isolating at times. Many people experience a huge sense of lost independence, facing challenges with mobility, complicated medical routines, and frustration maintaining personal care that once felt so simple. Our dedicated carers work collaboratively with your loved one, not just to do tasks for them, but helping them feel in control of their day.
From assisting with physiotherapy exercises, managing medication, supporting stoma or bowel care, or simply helping with everyday routines, our carers make complex care feel easier and more natural. The result is more than practical assistance; it’s reassurance and a sense of empowerment, helping your loved one regain confidence in their abilities and enjoy life at home.
Typical Daily Support
Every day with a spinal cord injury looks different, especially as needs change, whether that be physically, emotionally, or medically. Our carers work with your loved one, helping them feel supported, capable, and in control of their daily routines. A typical day might look like:
Morning routines: Safe transfers from bed to wheelchair, washing, dressing, grooming, bowel or continence routines, ventilator or breathing checks, and preparing breakfast.
Daily tasks: Housekeeping, laundry, meal planning and preparation (including support with PEG or gastrostomy feeding where required), grocery shopping, organising medication supplies, and helping your loved one engage with their hobbies and social activities.
Mobility support & physiotherapy: Assistance using hoists or mobility aids, wheelchair positioning and pressure relief routines, fall-prevention support and enabling clear pathways to move through the home, and guidance with physio exercises recommended by healthcare professionals.
Medication & clinical care management: Organising daily or weekly medications, administering prescribed doses, monitoring side effects, managing complex needs such as stoma care or catheter care, and liaising with nurses, therapists, and other health professionals as needed.
Evening & overnight care: Preparing dinner, supporting evening continence or bowel routines, helping your loved one get changed into sleepwear, assisting with safe transfers back to bed, establishing comforting sleep routines, and providing gentle overnight monitoring or help if they wake or need support. Our Partnership With Spinal Injuries Association
At Abbots Care, we are proud to be a partner of Spinal Injuries Association (SIA), the leading national charity supporting people affected by spinal cord injury. Through this partnership, we strengthen our specialist spinal care services and ensure that lived experience remains central to the support we provide.
The Spinal Injuries Association estimates that there are roughly 105,000 people living with spinal cord injuries in the UK, with 4,400 new cases being diagnosed each year. This highlights a growing need for skilled, specialist support to manage the wide-ranging impact this is having on individual’s day-to-day lives.
We recently took part in The Superhero Triathlon, raising £552 for Spinal Injuries Association! Discover more about how our partnership enables us to deliver better quality home care for people living with spinal injuries.
Specialist Medical and Complex Care for Spinal Injuries
People living with spinal cord injuries need support with complex medical needs as part of their daily routine, which our carers are trained to manage safely and confidently.
Bowel and continence care: Spinal injuries can significantly change bladder and bowel function, making reliable continence support essential. Our carers provide sensitive, respectful support with toileting routines, catheter care, and bowel management programmes to promote comfort and preserve dignity.
PEG (gastrostomy) feeding: For people with higher-level spinal injuries, PEG feeding can be essential for safe and reliable nutrition. Our home carers provide hygienic, clinically aligned PEG support, including administering feeds to caring for the site, making sure the process feels as comfortable as possible.
Stoma care: Living with a stoma can bring worries about leakage, discomfort, and maintaining skin health, and requires specialist handling from carers. Our team support with cleaning, emptying, and monitoring stomas to help maintain the area and prevent potential issues.
Ventilator or breathing support: Some spinal cord injuries impact respiratory abilities, leaving people feeling vulnerable and dependent. This makes assisted breathing a vital part of daily life. Our carers can help monitor breathing, manage ventilator equipment, and provide positioning support to maintain safety and comfort for your loved one.
Medication management: Managing medication can be one of the most demanding parts of spinal injury care, especially when pain relief, muscle relaxants, or infection-prevention treatments are involved. Our specialist carers can support with giving prescribed medication, watching for side effects, and communicating with healthcare professionals to make sure medication routines are safe and effective.
Skin and pressure care: Reduced mobility makes skin health a constant concern, and pressure sores can develop quickly without the right support. This makes proactive skin care an essential part of our carer’s daily tasks. They can support with regular repositioning, skin checks, and pressure-relief strategies to help maintain comfort.
