What is Respite Care?

Respite care services provide temporary care, which enables carers or loved ones to have a break from their regular care duties. This type of home care allows your loved ones to remain at home, where they are comfortable, without disturbing day-to-day routines – all whilst still receiving the care they need. Here at Abbots Care, we offer two types of respite care at home: Live-In Care services or Visiting Care services.

  • Live in care – This temporary care option provides your loved one with dedicated, around-the-clock care from one of our professional and compassionate care workers throughout the day and night.
  • Visiting care Whether it’s popping in for a friendly chat or helping with day-to-day tasks, visiting care provides extra support for a couple of hours a day or each week, depending on the needs of your loved one.

You might also need short-term care due to a family emergency or if something unexpected comes up. Respite care from Abbots Care ensures your loved ones always have someone there to support them, even when you’re not around. We offer emergency respite care for the elderly, children from any age, and those who require extra support with a disability, illness or following an operation. We also offer emergency respite care for dementia and for people living with cancer and long-term healthcare conditions.

Our respite carers can support with:

  • Personal care – Help with washing, getting dressed, and help getting in and out of bed.
  • Domestic support – Help with everyday tasks, from hanging washing to putting away dishes and ensuring the house is clean, tidy and safe.
  • Help with mealtimes – Whether your loved one cooks their meals from scratch or receives meal deliveries, our carers are here to ensure they eat a balanced and fulfilling diet, and will happily help with meal prep, support with eating and clearing away after mealtimes.
  • Companionship – A friendly face to chat to, rely on and enjoy their company.

Respite Care: A Resource for Caregivers

For many carers, the single biggest challenge they face is coping with the pressure and responsibility of providing care for a loved one on a regular basis. This can be especially problematic for those who balance care with work, or the 2.4 million ‘sandwich carers’, who simultaneously look after their children and their parents. If you currently care for a loved one and feel that you’re struggling or need support, there is an abundance of help out there. Our blog, ‘Caring for the Carer’ explains more, and we’re always here for advice and assistance.
